Ryan Penner joined Dunphy Best Blocksom LLP in 2012 after articling with the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench and at one of Calgary’s oldest and largest law firms.
Ryan practices in the area of general commercial litigation. He has extensive experience in the areas of commercial real estate, restaurant, hospitality and entertainment, intellectual property and employment. He also practices in the area of administrative law.
Ryan has appeared before all levels of court in Alberta as well as the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Saskatchewan Court of Queen’s Bench. He has acted as associate counsel to the Alberta Health Services Preferential Access Inquiry, advisor to the Alberta Human Rights Commission and has appeared before various other provincial and federal administrative boards and tribunals. Those tribunals include the Alberta Human Rights Commission, the Workers’ Compensation Board, the Municipal Government Board and related tribunals, the Canada Transportation Agency, the Beverage Container Management Board and the Safety Codes Council of Alberta.
Ryan is well-known for his legal expertise serving the hospitality and entertainment industries. Prior to becoming a lawyer, he worked in many roles within those industries and also operated his own independent record label. His unique background has enabled him to successfully help clients with general contract matters, shareholders’ disputes, occupier’s liability matters and matters involving intellectual property and artist mobility.
Ryan also has extensive experience assisting clients in dealing with administrative tribunals on both substantive and procedural issues, to ensure they are treated fairly by all government agencies.
He currently sits on the Board of Directors of the New Black Music and Arts Centre and has previously served as a board member for the Women in Need Society. In his spare time, Ryan enjoys spending time with his wife and children, playing soccer, skiing and reading.
