Jonathan Griffith began exclusively practicing family law in 2011 and joined the DBB family law team in 2013. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Calgary in 2006 and a Law degree from the University of New Brunswick in 2009. Jonathan was called to the Alberta bar in 2010.
Jonathan is committed to customizing the best possible approach to meet his clients’ needs. Trained in interest-based practices with a collaborative spirit, he believes that negotiation, mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution are powerful tools to help people resolve conflict. In situations where these approaches are not possible, Jonathan brings confidence and experience as a strong advocate at provincial court, the Court of Queen’s Bench and at the Court of Appeal.
Passionate about family law, Jonathan routinely involves himself in projects that expand his expertise. He has been a special contributor to a number of presentations, including Jason Wilkin’s presentation at Alberta’s Family Law Refresher in 2013 about securing client property interests in the family law context, as well as Ellen Embury’s 2013 presentation about the law of parentage declarations across Canada.
In July 2014, Jonathan was a faculty member at the Federation of Canadian Law Societies’ National Family Law Program where he presented his research and paper, “Queering Family Law After Same Sex Marriage”. The paper explores ways family lawyers can improve their practise to better serve Canada’s more marginalized families in light of historical and recent trends in family law.
Originally from Calgary, Jonathan values community involvement. He volunteers with Calgary Legal Guidance and serves on a Canadian Bar Association committee. Jonathan is also on the Board of Directors of Possibilities Calgary, an organization that creates community for Calgary’s queer and marginalized population.
Jonathan enjoys hiking, camping, and skiing in the majestic Rocky Mountains. He is also learning to play the violin and is an avid gamer. Jonathan is proud to be a regular participant in Extra Life, an annual gaming fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital Miracle Network.
